Tell me, have any of you seen films of the science fiction/horror/fantasy kinds recently that have impressed you more than you might have been expecting? Or are you thinking that there are simply far too many huge budget Hollywood style explosive visual spectacle movies one after another, with few films which actually seem to contain strong and challenging or original enough stories within them?

  1. I’ve seen some standouts in recent years. Just off the top of my head: Maniac, Dredd, Cabin in the Woods, Prometheus (I’m one of the guys who really loved it), District 9, Chronicle surprised, Super 8 REALLY worked for me, Looper was a lot of fun despite plotholes, Rise of the Planet of the Apes was awesome, the Star Trek reboots from Abrams have been surprisingly entertaining, even if they’ve COMPLETELY changed the mood of things, Moon dropped a few years back, but it’s an amazing mesh of sci fi and horror, Pontypool is a horror gem that dropped a few years back as well, and it’s one of the mot original approaches to the zombie subgenre I’ve ever seen. BEEN A LOT of quality stuff hitting the market over the last few years.

  2. Loved Super 8 also, a very charming, imaginative film. I’m also a huge fan of the Abrams Trek reboot.
